In my 20’s I made travel a priority. I loved going to different countries and learning about the culture there and meeting people from all over the world in hostels, hearing their stories and seeing the sights. I met many people who had quit their jobs, sold their stuff and decided to travel. I found the concept exciting, however I could never figure out how these people made enough money to fund their adventures. I heard many stories. Some people started a travel blog, had online stores, worked random jobs in the countries that they travelled to or just self funded their adventures through the sale of their things. None of this made sense to me. All these ideas have either a low chance of success, are not sustainable, or provide no security for the future. As great as it sounds to be able to travel when you want, I needed a home base and a solid financial future for myself and my family. Set Goals Over time, the goal of constant travel has changed. But the premise remains the same. I wanted financial freedom. But I didn’t know how to achieve it, or what the term “financial freedom” meant to me. I needed to quantify the term and set a path to achieve it. SMART goals were the answer and real estate provided the path. To make sure your goals are clear and reachable, each one should be: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time bound After spending some time looking at that, I realized that I needed passive income to fund my life. Real Estate was the answer for me. What’s Stopping You? It’s easy to get lost in the immediate priorities in your life. It’s comfortable to just go to work, drop your kids off at hockey, and deal with the everyday grind. Having hunger for more in your life is the only way to break out of the mundane routine. I needed to identify the obstacles that were in my way and break through them to achieve what I wanted. Accountability I hired a coach to hold me accountable for my actions. I created a vision board of where I wanted to be and then developed a plan to go get it. Am I doing what I say I am going to do? Am I following through with my goals and development? Am I breaking my goals down into actionable steps and taking daily action? It takes daily work and drive to make these things happen. Network I surrounded myself with people who were doing more than me. I got involved in networks of action takers, investors and people who had more experience than I did in what I wanted to do. I learned from these people, asked questions and dove into the research and strategies. It’s cliché, but you truly are the average of the people you surround yourself with. Fat Dog Don’t Hunt I read this saying in a newsletter from Rockstar Real Estate. A southern gentleman had used the saying to describe people who were too comfortable in their daily lives to have the hunger to achieve their potential. Time goes quickly. Hunger drives change. It’s up to you to take charge of your life and become the person you want to be.
